amc-preacher-episode-4-monster-swamp-review-insideAnother Sunday past, another episode of AMC’s Preacher Season 1 down, and another Week Joe Gilgun’s Cassidy steals the spotlight. The guy’s such a natural. Rather than the explosion of action I had been expecting, “Monster Swamp”, like its predecessor, was more setup and plot advancement than anything else. We had a lot of cool looks into Annville this week, let’s get to it…

  • I was hoping to see more flashbacks of The Cowboy in this episode, but alas, it was not to be. This has to happen next week for sure.
  • We start with a paintball game gone horribly wrong, which served as the basis of the episode, branching off into different subplots.
  • One of those subplots involved Odin Quincannon and his indifference to the death of the young woman on his property. This episode did well to establish Odin’s character, something that will play into his feud with Jesse that’s surely on the horizon (or is it? More on that in a sec…)
  • Another episodic subplot to stem from the “death by paintball” scene was Tulip discovering exactly what Cassidy is. She is present when the dead woman is discovered, a scene that deepens her hate for Clive and ultimately sees her beat Cassidy half to death… or so she thinks. The title of this blog was easily my favorite moment of the episode, the look on Cassidy’s face as he’s lying there blood soaked on the floor, classic…
  • We got some awesome flashbacks of Jesse Custer as a younger and learned that his father actually had dealings with Odin Quincannon as well. It turns out John Custer did his best to convert Odin to Christianity, but ultimately failed. We also learn that John Custer had pretty severe disciplinary methods, having actually whipped Jesse when he was younger for misbehaving.
  • Jesse eventually succeeds where his father never did at the end of the episode, using his power to force Odin to serve God. I did not see this coming at all. I honestly thought things would escalate episode to episode until Odin and Jesse duked it out at the end of the season. With Odin serving God, this is now rather unlikely. I am fascinated to see where this whole thing goes from here.

All and all, another entertaining episode. I feel like it’s time to start answering some of the seasons more significant questions; a quick look at the cast for Episode 5 suggests we may very well be getting those answers next week…

Spoiler…
